The music started at 5:30 am again this morning, however,
this time it wasn’t the uncle’s house; there was a celebration down the street
for a young man becoming a monk. It is common here for a boy, when he turns 20,
to become a monk for about three months, and there is a huge celebration
marking the start of this. Bu tells me that her 18 year old brother will be a
monk when he is 20.
We went into school in the morning because Bu wanted the
students to practice Little Red Riding Hood with me again, and she had some
materials that she wanted to prepare. We went to a noodle stand next to the
school for lunch. We also watched some episodes from a Thai TV show called
“Hormones” set in a Bangkok high school. Even though I don’t understand much Thai, it
still isn’t too hard to get the general picture of what is going on in the
show. Sometimes we watch some episodes from this in the afternoon, so I have
seen at least 10 episodes of this show so far. Then we went back to the house,
and since it was a pretty hot day, most people took naps in the afternoon and I
read in my room with the air conditioner on.
The music from the becoming-a-monk party started up again around 8:30pm,
and went until about 1am. I got to sleep before it ended, and was only woken up
periodically by particularly loud dance songs, but other people at the house
said they couldn’t get to sleep until it ended. 1am is pretty late here,
because everything is on a really early schedule. It gets light between 5 and
5:30 am, and everyone is up by 5:30-6. Going shopping at 6:15am is a completely
normal time to go and there are many people out and about. It makes sense to be
up here early, when it is a bit cooler.
